The lighting and ambiance are out of some classic Blue Note jazz photo by Francis Wolff -- saxophonists bathed in a blue-green light infused with cigarette smoke, a drummer in sport jacket, turtleneck, horn-rimmed glasses, and close-cropped '50s college-boy cut. The bassist leans into his work, bangs out a fierce, asymmetrical solo, and tilts his head in satisfaction, a cigarette pasted to his lower lip. When the band come in for the "head" arrangement, it's not what you'd expect from a young quintet of handsome young acoustic jazzers: rough unison horn lines, tilting rhythms, folk-like melodies more reminiscent of Ornette '59 than Wynton '95.

From a description of SMOKE by Jon Garelick, The Boston Pheonix 1994

Welcome to the SMOKE web site. I thought it would be best to open with this description of the night for the sole reason that it as accurate as anything I've ever read. Mr. Garelick saw what I see everytime SMOKE comes to mind and put it on paper. Take a look through the site and see if you can see it too.

"Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom... They teach you there's a boundry line to music. But, man, there's no boundry line to art."

Charlie Parker
